Our Interview with Ana

What was life like before becoming a client?

Life before Zoned (formerly HVF) was me working remotely from home. Working from home sounds better then what it was. My day was spent sitting in front of computer 8hrs per day with no socialization with co-workers outside of routine phone calls. Pretty sedentary, which is why finding ZONED gave me a reason to get out and get exercise which is the exact opposite of what I had been doing while at work.

At the time you enrolled, were you already exercising? What was your previous background in fitness?

If I recall correctly at the time I enrolled I either just stopped attending Planet fitness or was still going, but thinking of stopping. I have no background in fitness, but always felt and knew that it was something that I wanted to become a part of my life. I guess all the ads, commercials, doctor visits, etc played a role in knowing that part of healthy lifestyle had to include some sort of fitness regimen.

What originally prompted you to seek out HVF/ZONED?

HVF/ZONED was actually an accidental find. One day I was on a walk in Beacon and came across the studio front, but it was closed at the time. I had no clue that the studio was even a part of Beacon. A few days later I stopped by and walked in while Kyle (former employee) was working there and asked about HVF. He answered my questions and I quickly enrolled.

What was your goal when you originally signed up?

My goal was to exercise and to find a place to exercise at. I wanted to begin an exercise regimen because I knew it was something I needed and wanted to do. I wasn't getting any younger and felt that I needed to start sooner rather then later.

Why was this goal important?

It was important for me because I wanted to lead a healthier lifestyle that included exercising. I always tried to eat healthy, in moderation, but a steady exercise regimen was missing, I also knew that with my family history of diabetes I had to become active to help that family history not become a part of my personal history. I routinely get my blood sugars checked during my annual physicals and I'm happy to say that this year's blood work revealed lower blood sugar levels, so I'm fighting that fight pretty well.

How long had you had this goal?

As I started to get older the more I began thinking that exercising needed to be a part of my lifestyle to keep me fit and "not let myself go".

What were the top 1-2 things that held you back from achieving your goal?

Exercising alone. Always wanted some type of companionship; someone to exercise with to encourage each other. The ZONED family has fulfilled that want 100%.

What had you tried to get to your goal before?

I tried exercising on my own by running at the track. I also had purchased a Bowflex treadclimber machine. Both short-lived as I became bored. My husband and I also take walks around Beacon, so that was some form of exercise that I did.

What have you liked best about working with HVF/ZONED?

EVERYTHING!!!!! 7-8yrs at ZONED/HVF is the longest I've ever kept to an exercise regimen, so that speaks volumes. Keith and Soji are amazing and are always willing to answer questions. The classes are always a full body workout and the class size are always just right. The ZONED community and family is just as important as the classes and workout itself. I have met people along the way who have motivated and inspired me to keep moving(as Keith would say); THANK YOU to Maureen, Jeanna, Jane & Robin, you guys kill it every time and without knowing it have helped me stay in this fitness game.

What challenges have you overcome and struggled with that kept you from progressing faster with your goals?

During my time at ZONED/HVF I had my 3rd child, had surgery and was diagnosed with anemia. It was a high risk pregnancy therefore exercising was forbidden, so returning postpartum was a challenge, but one I looked forward to because I had made ZONED/HVF a part of my life and was eager to get back to it. As for my surgery doctors said 6wks off, but I made it 4wks, lol. Didn't want to wait too long, again because I wanted to get back to it. The anemia just made it difficult to breath, to catch my breath, therefore my effort was affected, but that didn't stop me from continuing to attend ZONED/HVF. I took my breaks as needed. Present day my anemia is gone and I'm back to giving my best effort possible.

What are you most proud of achieving since you started training?

I'm proud that I'm still training; that I'm still attending ZONED/HVF; that I've made it a part of my life for the last 7-8yrs and don't plan on stopping. I'm proud that this year I decided to increase my attendance from 3 days a week to 5 days a week. I'm proud that because of my training I decided to run a 5K for "IRunBeacon" and completed it. I'm mostly proud that I make ZONED a daily appointment in my life. I work around the class schedule as to not have an excuse no to attend.

Now that you achieved, or are well on your way to achieving, your goal has your view of yourself changed?

I'm physically a stronger person; I push myself more. I try to break my routine and not get so comfortable which means grabbing that 25lb weight instead of the 20lb weight.

How do you feel about your future?

I have a beautiful family and many blessings to be thankful for. My future is my family and I pray that we remain healthy, active and happy together. Remaining active will help me be there for my family. My son Lenny Jr is a professional athlete, my daughter Jalana exercises on her own and at times has joined me, my little guy Josiah is active just by being a 3yr old and my husband Lenny is a bike rider plus works construction, so the family as a whole "keeps it moving".

What else is different about your life since beginning your program?

I'm a foodie, love eating! Truly tough to find a balance with nutrition and fitness, but I have become more aware of my eating habits and I'm trying to make better choices. I've also taken part in ZONED "summer team challenge" and the "28 day fat loss challenge" both of which assisted me in staying focus and provided direction with nutrition.

Where would you be if you hadn’t started your program at HVF/ZONED?

Probably still looking for the right fitness fit or possibly not doing any exercise at all. I love the guidance we are given at ZONED/HVF. It's group training that truly feels like personal training sessions.

What would you say to anyone else who might be dealing with similar problems you faced before working with HVF/ZONED?

The hardest part is to take the first step towards a "better you"(as Soji would say). Take the initiative and find what will best work for you, for your schedule, for your body and go for it. I found that in ZONED and have been grateful for the walk around Beacon that led to this awesome find. THANK YOU Keith & Soji!
