Our Interview with Maureen


What was life like before becoming a client?: Prior to becoming a client, I "thought" I led a pretty healthy/fit lifestyle. I am a 1st grade teacher and had just gotten married. I was thin from all the wedding workouts but not healthy. I was never fully satisfied with where I was at workout wise.

At the time you enrolled, were you already exercising? What was your previous background in fitness?: When I first started with HVF, I was doing some light exercising. I had always been an active person. I was a cheerleader back in High School and either on the field cheering or at the local YMCA working out! I actually just recently found my first gym membership card and it was dated way back to when I was 12!

What originally prompted you to seek out HVF/ZONED?: I looked into HVF after I had gained a lot of weight (at least 30 lbs) during my first pregnancy, I had a very hard time losing it and nothing I was doing on my own was helping. I can remember looking online for places that had personal training (I didn't like going to Gold's Gym-I never felt like I fit there). I was new to the area-having just moved here after I got married, so the internet was my best friend for help! I started with having Keith come to my house for personal sessions.

What was your goal when you originally signed up?: When I first started working out, my basic goal was to be able to do any form of exercise without getting winded super fast. I knew that I was never going to be the girl I was back in HS or even the crazy thin (but unhealthy) woman who had just gotten married. I remember my first "assessment" that Keith did with me, and I couldn't believe how poor I did. Now, Keith NEVER said I didn't do well, but I myself knew. That was a wakeup call for me.


Why was this goal important?: My goal was important because I had become so unhealthy that I didn't recognize myself. I had a lot of major stressors going on in my life at this and the extra weight that I was carrying around was not helping.
Unfortunately, my first pregnancy was lost at 17 weeks, so I knew that I need to get myself back into shape if I wanted to try to have another baby.
I also needed to do this for me. I was unhappy. This was no way to live.

How long had you had this goal?: My goal of wanted to get back into fitness and back into a healthy lifestyle was a rather quick one for me. Everything seemed to happen so fast. I literally feel like one day I was good and the next, here I was overweight, unhealthy, and sad.

What were the top 1-2 things that held you back from achieving your goal?: For me the things that held me back from finally achieving my goals were the things that I needed to do in order to have a family. Although I also used these as an excuse to eat whatever I wanted and to slack off exercise wise. I went through a round of IUI and IVF before becoming pregnant again with my daughter. So the two procedures and the second pregnancy added a good 40+ pounds onto me.....on top of the other 30lbs from before.

What had you tried to get to your goal before?: I had tried home workouts and going to another gym. Neither worked. I needed the support and someone to hold me accountable. I also needed to get my food on track. This is where Keith came in.


Were you more driven to solve a problem or achieve a goal?: At first I was looking to just make my goal of losing weight. It was not until after that goal had been reached, that I then switched my mindset to solving the problem of improper eating and yo-yo diets.

How did you originally hear about HVF/ZONED?: I found HVF online. I literally googled "personal trainers in Fishkill area" and HVF popped up!

How were you feeling about your goal at that time you enrolled?: I was nervous. I didn't want anyone to see me "at my worst" but Keith made me feel like I could achieve my goal-without any judgement.

What have you liked best about working with HVF/ZONED?: After doing personal home sessions, I moved to the original HVF studio and continued with personal sessions. I remember the day that Keith told me he was moving the studio down the road and that he was going to start to offer classes. Again, I was nervous and it took me awhile to warm up to the idea of group classes, but honestly, I CAN'T see myself working out any other way now. I have said it a million times before and I will continue to say it, this place feels like a second home to me. I have made new friendships and formed a second family at ZONED.

What challenges have you overcome and struggled with that kept you from progressing faster with your goals?: Having my daughter was a rough time for me. I slowly stopped working out and then had to wait to get the 6 week "ok" from my doctor before I could start up again. Once I got the ok though, I was ready to push forward again.


How did you overcome them?: I held myself accountable for making my workout sessions. I had the huge support of my parents who would come and babysit while I went to workout. Once I was done with my maternity leave, I also made going to my classes a scheduled event. Each class went in my phone like any other appointment would.
I also had the support from the friends that I have made at ZONED. If there is a time when I am tired, I can text one of them and they will motivate me to get my butt to the studio!

What are you most proud of achieving since you started training?: I completed my first FULL marathon back in October. I attribute my my strength training at ZONED along with my marathon training in helping me achieve this goal.

Now that you achieved, or are well on your way to achieving, your goal has your view of yourself changed?: My view of myself has completely changed! I feel more confident and strong, not just physically but mentally too. I love the challenges that I take on each time I walk through the ZONED front door. Even if it's an activity that I have done before, I try to make it better. Keith is always finding a way to push me to my next level.

How do you feel about your future?: I can't see myself going anywhere else. I love the way I feel when I leave the studio. I am proud of myself and have a self confidence that I never had before. I truly feel like I can do anything.

What else is different about your life since beginning your program?: A lot in my life has changed since I started with HVF (now ZONED). I have had major ups and downs, through the loss of my first child, to the loss of other family members, to finding out I was going to have another baby....it's been a rollercoaster! One thing I have always loved is how Keith has always there-not only is he a great trainer but he's quite a good therapist too-lol


Where would you be if you hadn’t started your program at HVF/ZONED?: I honestly don't know where I would be had I not found HVF/ZONED. I don't want to think of where I would be because I don't think it would be in a happy place. My achievements probably would not exist.

What would you say to anyone else who might be dealing with similar problems you faced before working with HVF/ZONED?: I think I would say, just try it! You can't lose anything, you can only gain. You will get your self confidence back, you will get your happiness back, you will get YOU back. The words "Keith" and "ZONED" are everyday words in my daily life now. Everyone from my family to my friends and coworkers know who I am talking about and where I am talking about when I say them.
When you walk through those doors, you're walking into a better you.....each and every time.
